Biowork Pre-Apprentices Prepare for the Future

Students at Corinth Holders High School are embracing a future in Biotechnology. Rather than waiting to begin this journey after graduation, they are taking advantage of this tuition-free opportunity to earn a post-graduation credential.

In partnership with Johnston Community College (JCC), Johnston County Public Schools’ (JCPS) juniors and seniors have the opportunity to enroll in the JCC Biowork Pre-Apprenticeship. This program allows students to complete the JCC Biowork Continuing Education course where they can obtain the knowledge and skills to earn a Biowork certificate. The Biowork certificate is industry-valued and a gateway to multiple in-demand biotechnology and pharmaceutical careers.

“You never know what excitement awaits when walking into a Bioworks class,” declares Ashley Hill, Special Populations Coordinator at Corinth Holders High. “From measurement labs using pipettes to students supporting each other while solving a math conversion problem, the comradery is apparent and refreshing to observe first-hand.” Students are also learning essential employability skills in team building, communication, and critical thinking. Most notable is the inclusiveness these activities provide to bring students together and empower their future.

JCPS has enrolled over 150 students in the JCC Biowork Pre-Apprenticeship across its 8 traditional high schools over the last three semesters. So far, 84 students have been awarded the Biowork Certificate, with more certificates expected by the end of Spring semester.
