Trojans Prepare for Next Steps during Career Development Month

November marks National Career Development Month, and Johnston County Public Schools is providing opportunities for students to develop and refine their future plans. South Johnston High School (SJHS) dived in with activities that help students imagine and pursue their future pathways. The celebration began October 21–23 as SJHS buzzed with energy during its annual Career and College Readiness Event, giving every student the chance to explore college and career possibilities.
Hosted by the SJHS Counselors & Career Development Coordinator, this event provided a vital platform for students to connect directly with representatives from dozens of colleges, universities, military branches, and local businesses, all in one place. The goal was to inspire students, broaden their horizons, and give them the tools and information they need to make informed decisions about their post-graduation plans.
Representatives from throughout North Carolina including private and public universities along with a few community colleges and trade schools were present. Students were able to ask important questions about campus life, admissions requirements, financial aid, and specific fields of study. Beyond college, the event showcased the diverse career paths available in the community and state. Students engaged with professionals from various fields, learning about job responsibilities, required training, and industry demand. This year’s participants included representatives from skilled trades and technology, healthcare, public service, education, law, business and finance and military branches.
Rounding out the week of SJHS career & college events, students got an eye-opening glimpse into their financial futures during the State Employees Credit Union’s Reality of Money event on October 24th. This hands-on simulation transformed teenagers into young adults for a day, complete with a job, salary, and a long list of monthly expenses. The Reality of Money simulation, a high-impact financial literacy activity, challenged students to make real-world decisions about budgeting. Guided by incredible community volunteers, students navigated various stations to pay for essentials like housing, transportation, food, and utilities. Throughout the simulation, students were exposed to critical financial lessons including living within your means, the impact of credit, the value of education. Students left with a much clearer understanding of the financial challenges and opportunities that await them after graduation.
Moving in to November, SJHS, along with more than 3,500 students from Johnston County Public Schools attended JOCO WORKS World or Works (WOW). During the two-day event, held on the Johnston Community College campus, students had the opportunity to explore career possibilities from more than 40 Johnston County-based employers. WOW is a groundbreaking initiative that is transforming the way students explore future careers. For students who already have a career path in mind, they receive in-depth exposure to their desired field. For students who are just beginning to consider what they would like to pursue as they move into high school, the event is a first step towards a career path.
These events are not possible without amazing community volunteers and strong local workforce and community partnerships. SJHS and JCPS CTE extend their deepest gratitude to all the volunteers and local business professionals who invest their time and wisdom to guide students to a successful career.
