Central Carolina Drones Soars to Success

CCOC is thrilled to announce that Jay MacArthur, a rising talent in the field of aviation, has emerged as the winner of the 2023 Student to Entrepreneurs Program (STEP), organized by the Clayton Chamber of Commerce. Jay’s venture, Central Carolina Drones, not only secured the top honors but also demonstrated the immense potential of young entrepreneurs in our community.

The STEP Program, designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications, is a platform for sophomore and junior high school students aspiring to become entrepreneurs. Through experiential learning, the program imparts essential entrepreneurial and economic principles while fostering connections between students and seasoned business leaders.

Jay MacArthur, sharing his journey, expressed his passion for aviation which predates his high school years. He eagerly pursued every opportunity to learn about aviation, culminating in the acquisition of his FAA Part 107 license through the Drone Technology course at his school. With a vision to turn his passion into a business, Jay seized the opportunity presented by the STEP Initiative.

“Having limited entrepreneurial experience, the STEP program seemed like the perfect avenue to gain the necessary skills and hands-on experience,” Jay shared. “I’ve been conducting research and plan to take additional business-related classes to further develop my company.”  The STEP program, in collaboration with Grand Canyon University’s Entrepreneurship Program and mentorship from David and Elena Viverette of Drone Expeditions, LLC, provided Jay with invaluable support. This culminated in the STEP Pitch Night, a Shark Tank-style event, where Jay faced local business owners assessing his product knowledge, marketing strategies, financial acumen, and business model.

Excitement filled the air at the Harvest Festival when Jay was declared not only the winner of the STEP Pitch Night but also the recipient of the People’s Choice award. Through a free vendor booth provided by the program, Jay showcased Central Carolina Drones to the public, solidifying his place as a standout entrepreneur in the making.

Reflecting on his victories, Jay expressed gratitude for the growth he experienced throughout the STEP program. “I now have a tangible business structure to take Central Carolina Drones to new heights,” he enthused.
