Congratulations Matthew Barnhill, 2023 JCPS CTE Teacher Of The Year!
In April, Johnston County Public Schools CTE named Matt Barnhill as the 2023 JCPS CTE Teacher of the Year. The JCPS CTE Teacher of the Year is our nominee for the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching’s North Carolina CTE Teacher of the Year Award. On June 9th we were notified that Mr. Barnhill has been selected as a finalist for the 2023 NC CTE Teacher of the Year!
Mr. Barnhill has been an Agriculture Teacher and FFA Advisor at Corinth Holders High School for the past eleven years. Mr. Barnhill graduated from NC State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Agricultural Education and Horticultural Science and from NC A&T State University with a Master’s of Science in Agricultural Education. He is also a National Board Certified Teacher.
Mr. Barnhill is a dedicated and committed leader in the education profession. He has served as CTE department chair at Corinth Holders for the past eight years. He has twice served as Federation Advisor for the Johnston FFA Federation and as well as Regional Advisor for the East Central Region FFA.
In 2019 he was elected by his peers to serve as Treasurer for the East Central FFA region. At the state level Matt has facilitated workshops for teachers during Agriculture Education’s summer workshop series and the NC CTE Summer Conference. These workshop topics include greenhouse management, plant sales, preparing students for the state FFA officer selection process, and managing and training chapter officer teams.
Since 2010 he has served as the facilitator of the selection process to elect state FFA officers to train and support members of the nominating committee and facilitate the selection process. Mr. Barnhill serves on the North Carolina FFA Board of Directors and recently completed a three year term providing strategic direction and oversight of our state’s FFA programs and activities. During two of those years he served as finance committee chair to provide overall financial oversight and budget analysis for the nonprofit.
On the national level Mr. Barnhill has been a part of the National Association of Agricultural Educators XLR8 (eXcellence in Leadership for Retention) year long professional development program. He is currently a National Agriscience Teacher Ambassador and will present workshops at the National FFA Convention and ACTE/NAAE National Conference.
Mr. Barnhill is a teacher that makes a positive difference in the life of each student by encouraging their leadership potential, personal growth and career success. We appreciate Mr. Barnhill’s passion for education and his leadership at the local, state, and national level. Congratulations on all of your accomplishments!
