The South Johnston High School FFA Chapter attended and competed at the 96th National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 1 – 4, 2023. Students who attended participated in general sessions, leadership opportunities, and agritourism experiences.
The Milk Quality & Products Career Development Event team competed against other FFA chapters from across the nation finishing in 15th place. In this contest, students had to: identify cheeses and their various characteristics, taste milks to determine what defects were present in the samples, perform a California Mastitis Test and grade each milk sample, and determine the fat percentage of various dairy & non-dairy products. Members were accessed on their knowledge of milk quality practices & milk marketing statistics, and they had to determine standard plate counts, somatic cell counts, preliminary incubations counts, freezing points of milk samples, sanitation swab test, snap test for the milk samples, titratable acidity test. Lastly, the team had to present the data to a panel of judges on what the dairy farm should do to resolve the issues.
